Similar to a few weeks ago we have another great weekend overflowing with geekdom. So much to do I can’t decide how i want to spend my time.
The weekend begins on midnight on Thursday with the opening of Iron Man 3
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day and “May the Fourth Be with You!” both recently created holidays. Free Comic Book Day started in 2002 as a collaboration between comic shop and publishers with the goal to gain new fans by publishing free comics for people to use as a jumping on point into the larger world of comics. Today it has become Black Friday like for comic book shops with huge sales, costume contests, and comic creator signs. Geek Triumvirate will be a few places this Saturday. The Comics Club, Read More Comics, Heroes Haven, Desert Dune Comics, and Ultimate Comics. For more information visit Free Comic Book Day.
Saturday is May 4th or better know as “May the Fourth be with you” day. Started on social media to celebrate the date that is similar to the famous phrase from the Star Wars films “May the Force be with you” . The date has now become annual event to celebrate all things Star Wars. Disney Hollywood Studios was already planning to have Star Wars celebration throughout May and June but last week they announce on May 4th they were going to have events at the park featuring Star Wars characters attending rides, a symphony performance, and a fireworks show. For more information about Disney’s Hollywood Studios “limited time magic” Star Wars celebration click image below.
You also have a new episode of Doctor Who and Game of Thrones both hitting their strides a few episodes deep into the season. Plus NHL PLAYOFFS!
We started by having to get our tickets, except for Theresa, who had already pre-ordered her ticket, so she had to get into a advance ticket line which ran almost the entire length of the convention hall.
After being over-stimulated with amazing cosplayers, we ventured through the convention floor taking in all the sights of toys, costumes, and artwork galore.
In the afternoon we attended a panel featuring David Prowse, Jeremy Bulloch, and Paul Blake. Better known as Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Greedo from Star Wars.
After hanging with my buddy from college I thought I would bring back something I did at my college newspaper, a top ten list. I know its cliche but people like humor and can easily understand things in list.
Here are my top tens things I like to see or encounter during MegaCon 2013:
A hipster using a typewriter
Someone ask me if I have ever been to Disney World
A Dalek in a bathroom stall
A girl in a red wig 😉
Cosplay mashup of anime and McDonald’s character. Think, Samurai Grimace
The cast of Star Trek:TNG wearing Star Wars: Episode VII shirts
Someone realize as they purchase their tickets that MegaCon is not a conference about Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis
Recently I went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT to experience some of the latest attractions and share via our twitter machine some of the more unique things to find if your a veteran park visitor such as myself. Here is a gallery of the highlights.
Hollywood Studios was hosting a high school dance team competition so all the teenage girls running around made me feel like high school and i was just the uncool kid again.
I wanted to see the new Legend of Jack Sparrow at Hollywood Studios but a 30 minute wait for a walking tour just did not seem like how I want to waste my day.
You don’t need to take the tours to see all the great animation display at Art of Animation or back-lot tour to see the AFI Showcase of movie memorabilia This was recently updated from a villains exhibit they have had for years.
Look in the coming weeks for more Disney related insight such as a full list of tips and secrets for each park.

Yesterday it was reported that Disney bought Lucasfilm for four billion dollars. Part of the announcement included plans to bring new Star Wars films to the big screen as early as 2015. Twitter and Facebook were a buzz about it yesterday with most people’s opinion either its great for the franchise or a horrible idea because Disney will rape and pillage the intellectual property many of us grew up on. I feel it will be great thing in the short term. Lucasfilm and Disney already have a solid working relationship now with Star Tours at the Disney Parks. Both studios are at creative highs then lows with Star Wars: The Clone Wars receiving high ratings on Cartoon Network and Disney releasing a string of successful animated films such as Brave and Tangled. Disney has been careful since they purchased Marvel not to get too involved with creative day to day. I see a similar method happening with Lucasfilm and Disney using their distribution muscles to get new Star Wars movie on the big screen. However I do see long term once George Lucas is a blue spirit haunting Hayden Christensen the Mouse House will take a more exploitative roll with the license and you will see something gaudy like a Star Wars theme hotel at Walt Disney World.
