16 Hours of Playing Video Games to Mark The Longest Day
Playing video games for 16 hours is normal for a teenager on summer vacation, but if a bunch of adults were doing it, they would be said to be wasting their day. Not when those adults are defending castles from dragons or hunting zombies to participate in The Longest Day. For 16 hours today, a group of gamers — my fellow coworkers at Geektriumvirate.com, my girlfriend and I — will be playing video games to honor those with Alzheimer’s.
I love playing video games. But more than that, I love my grandmother, who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s.
When I first saw the idea for The Longest Day in one of the Alzheimer’s Association emails, I knew immediately video games would be a great media to get friends and family involved. Video games now are rich with online gameplay and cooperative interaction that, for some of my friends, is the only way we are able to share each other’s time. I wanted to give my friends the sense of achievement you get from actually taking part in a charitable endeavor. But more importantly, I wanted to show my family how much I care about what my grandmother is going through.
Today, we are playing a variety of games — Borderlands 2, World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag — all while sharing the experience with friends via Google Hangout and live streaming the event on our YouTube channel. The morning hours are starting great as teammates Andrew and Amanda are playing World of Warcraft with their guild. Their online guild consists of 250 members from all over the world. Just knowing this event is involving so many people makes me appreciate why I set out to create this event.
Many hours already into The Longest Day, and my thumbs are sore but my spirits are up. Friends and family have been checking in on us via Google Hangout to say hi and watch us. Tonight, we will cap off this important day by visiting the opening party for The Art of Video Games exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.
Today has been truly fulfilling as we used the leisurely fun of video games to help an important and serious cause. I don’t want anyone else to endure what my grandmother endured with this disease. My hope is, there will be an end to Alzheimer’s.
About the Author: When Nathan Dean, 33, isn’t playing video games, he works as a logistics analyst for a marketing agency and is cofounder of the blog GeekTriumvirate.com in Grand Rapids, Mich. This is his first year participating in Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day®.

On June 21, we are participating in The Longest Day, an event to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease. From sunrise to sunset, we will complete an activity of our choosing to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Throughout the day Geek Triumvirate will be playing a variety of video games from old school to next gen. Games to played include; Borderlands 2, World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed 4:Black Flag, and many more. In addition we will be visiting the Toledo Museum of Art for the exhibit Art of the Game. For more information visit here.
Together, we can advance research to treat, prevent and, ultimately, cure Alzheimer’s, and provide programs and support to improve the lives of those affected today.
Feast of Winter Veil is in full swing. The World Event runs from December 16th-January 2nd. If you are playing as Horde, head over to Orgrimmar and see what Great-Father Winter has for you. Likewise, if you are playing as Alliance, head over to Ironforge and see what Greatfather Winter has for you. You will spend most of your time in your respected capital city, in Alterac Mountains (where the Daily Quests send you) and in enemy capitals to work on achievements.
You can buy patterns and recipes from Smokeywood Pastures NPC’s.
- Pattern: Red Winter Clothes is sold by Wulmort Jinglepocket in Ironforge;
- Pattern: Green Winter Clothes is sold by Penney Copperpinch in Orgrimmar;
- Pattern: Winter Boots is sold by Wulmort Jinglepocket in Ironforge and Penney Copperpinch in Orgrimmar.
You also have a chance at getting 4 pets from christmas presents under the tree on December 25th.
There is also a 1% chance of a Dagger dropping from the Daily. I got Miniature Winter Veil Tree last Feast, but no such luck this year.
The achievements for Winter Veil are:
- A-Caroling We Will Go (Alliance/Horde)
- A Frosty Shake
- BB King (Alliance/Horde)
- Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s (Alliance/Horde)
- Crashin’ & Thrashin’
- He Knows If You’ve Been Naughty
- Let It Snow
- On Metzen!
- Scrooge (Alliance/Horde)
- Simply Abominable
- The Winter Veil Gourmet
- ‘Tis the Season
- With a Little Helper from My Friends
You might have noticed that when you go into Inns, you see Winter Revelers. If you /kiss one of the revelers, 2 things are going to happen.
- You will get a Mistletoe debuff, which prevents you from kissing another Reveler for an hour.
- you get 1 of 3 rewards that you need to complete some of the achievements: Fresh Holly; Handful of Snowflakes; Mistletoe.
Fa-la-la-la-Ogri’la requires you to use Fresh Holly or Preserved Holly while doing the Bomb Them Again! daily quest in Blade’s Edge Mountains. When you complete the quest, you will get the achievement.
To finish Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s, Alliance players will need to obtain 8 pieces of Mistletoe while Horde players will only need 3. Then, players need to visit NPCs and use the Mistletoe on them.
- Alliance NPCs
- Brother Nimetz: Rebel Camp in Stranglethorn Vale
- Brother Karman: Theramore, just outside the keep, next to the training dummies
- Brother Joshua: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, next to the altar
- Brother Benjamin: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, walking on the right side as you enter
- Brother Cassius: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, in the first room on the right
- Brother Crowley: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, down the stairs on the right
- Brother Kristoff: Stormwind City, just outside the Catedral, next to the fountain
- Brother Wilhelm: Goldshire, outside the forge
- Horde NPCs
- Brother Malach: Undercity, at the War Quarter
- Brother Keltan: Icecrown, aboard the Horde airship
- Durkot Wolfbrother: Borean Tundra, south-west corridor out of Warsong Hold
The Daily Quest in Alterac Mountains is pretty much a Tank n Spank. The Abominable Greench has kidnapped Metzen the Reindeer. You have to go find the Greench, kill him, and talk to Metzen and he will return to Father-Winter.
I bought the Virtual ticket for Amanda, so she could get the Murkalot pet.
So far its still in opening ceremony, the Hearthstone card that is being given to attendees and VT holders, is the Elite Tauren Chieftain. Open Beta will be next month (or January, in Blizz speak)
Heroes of the Storm
Warlords of Draenor is the next expansion set for World of Warcraft
- New World: Draenor
- Level cap raised to 100
- Boost to 90 and play immediately
- New character models
- Build and upgrade your garrison
- New dungeons and raids
- New monsters
- New World PvP zone
The Dark days of Warcraft are returning, and it will be the Alliances finest hour.
- Home of the Orcs before it was shattered into present day Outland
- Heart of Draenei civilization
- Brutal, primal world of giants
- 7 new zones
They are giving us a launch event finally. Basically a suicide mission into the dark portal to get a foothold into Draenor. For the Horde, the first zone you go to is Frostfire ridge, which is snowy mountain area with active volcanoes.
This will be the world map for Draenor. The island to the south is home to the Ogre Empire. The island to the northeast will be released in one of the later patches, its the area that we know of now as Netherstorm.
New Character models
People have been asking for years for Blizzard to give us some form of player housing, and in Warlords, we have that in the way of Garrisons. Garrisons allows you to, over 3 tiers, build a base of operations in whatever zone you want to. This will NOT be phased like the farm in Valley was, but we can invite friends to come and see, as well as us going to see their Garrison as well.
An inside view of The Barracks that you can put into your GarrisonOutside view of The BarracksAs we are adventuring through Draenor, we will come across people who want to help us out with our Garrisons and (for lack of better words) be our followers. We can send them on missions (quests/dungeons/raids, each taking a different amount of time to complete), we can give them gear to change their stats, and help them survive more. They can also be used to collect materials for crafting. The Follower UII’ve been wanting housing for a long time, so I am really stoked about this. Garrison placement UI, lets you choose what buildings you want, and where you want to put them. The sample building they gave us.Each building has 3 levels, that you can upgrade over 3 Tiers
Looks like we are getting the item squish that has been rumored. Honestly, I won’t care about a squish, AS LONG as I can still solo the shit that I solo now. No report yet as of who will be the final boss of the expansion, all that is known is that Garrosh is NOT it, he only gets the ball rolling. I’m leaning towards Mannoroth. He probably comes back upset that Gul’dan and his crew were the only ones to actually drink his blood and what not.
- Duncan Jones, Director, has played all of the Warcraft games, including Lost Viking, and he has multiple level 90s
- The guy who will be in charge of special effects, plays, and has a level 90 mage (Alliance)
- The original script was very Aliiance focused, so he took that, and in turn, turned it into something that was more balanced, and focused on both sides
- While working on Golden Compass, the special effects supervisor (see point 2) would get up at 2am to raid with his guild, which was located in the US
- The story will be Orcs vs Humans. Lothar vs Durotan
- The movie will be PG-13, but lately, movies are getting away with a lot more than they could 10 years ago
I’m a Wrath baby (I cam in when the last wing of ICC was released). I was excited when cataclysm got released, and, like everyone else, I was let down by the lack of content. Mists of Pandaria changed all that though, with all the extra content they added at end game. I didn’t mind the Pet Battles, and I enjoyed having my own farm (more Harvest Moon and Farmville, it came first). I really enjoyed my playing time during MoP, and, for the most part, enjoyed it all (even if they went a little overboard with the dailies, but hey, that gave me stuff to do that I didn’t have during the previous expansion, when all their was at max level was raiding).
Warlords of Draenor seems to be taking the successful things that MoP had, and they seem to be expanding on them. As soon as a farm was announced, I figured that either the following expansion or the one after that would have some sort of player housing with it. Garrison’s are just that..player housing on steroids, and I couldn’t be happier. It reminds of the downloadable wii game from Square-Enix, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.
Another thing that I am glad they are adding in are dynamic events. Now, instead of leveling, moving to the next zone, and never going back to a zone (other than for crafting supplies), you can go back and take part in random events throughout the zone, keeping the zone feeling fresh and active, instead of stagnant and dead. The world PvP map they are adding is interesting as well. No start/finish, just changing objectives giving you new tasks to do (seems like someone on the blizz team played a little WvW in Gw2)
Overall, I’m glad to see that they are taking the game forward, and really hoping for Beta to start next month, with a release between April and June.
Today starts one of my favorite World Events, Hallow’s End. For those players that are at least level 89, they will be granted access to the headless horseman fight that takes place in the graveyard of the Scarlet Monastery. Its a pretty simple fight attack the horseman until he is almost dead, then when his head jumps off and bounces around attack the head until it rejoins the body. Rinse and repeat. On your 3rd focused attack on the head (and every attack thereafter) pumpkin adds will pop up, just AOE them till they are dead and then refocus on the boss (that doesn’t take long at all). Once you defeat him, you get a cache box once daily, that contains anything from candy pieces, to gold, to wands that can turn party members into various spooky monsters.
The Horseman himself will drop either Band of the Petrified Pumpkin (Melee ring), Seal of Ghoulish Glee (Physical DPS ring), Wicked Witch’s Signet (Healer ring), The Horseman’s Ring (Spell DPS), The Horseman’s Horrific Hood (Melee, for Plate wearers), The Horseman’s Sinister Slicer (One handed, Physical DPS) or uber rarely The Horseman’s Reins (The Headless Horseman’s very mount). This is good for those that have been working on alts and maybe just hit 90, grab the stuff here before you head out to the Timeless Isle.
Thanks to the various innkeepers around Azeroth and Outland, you can pick candy from a pumpkin bucket, and if you do, you have the chance of your character being transformed into just about anything. This is my badass troll turned into a freakin gnome pirate. Kind of emasculating if you ask me.
Once you are done with being transformed, head over to Brill/Falconwing Square/Razor Hill (if Horde) or Azure Watch/Goldshire/Kharanos (if Alliance) and save the town from the fires of the horseman. Find your respective Orphan Matron and proceed to run water buckets and throw them on buildings to put out the fire. This can only be done once a day on your toon, so if you do it in one location, you can’t do it at the other 2 in the same day.
Tricky Treats are the special Hallow’s End currency that you can use at a vendor to buy items. The only thing really worth buying is the Feline Familiar Pet. The cat has 2 distinct looks. One when you are on the ground, and one for when you are flying.
There are other daily quests that you can do, if you are Horde, you hop a broom and teleport to Stormwind (vice versa if Alliance) and ride on the broom dropping stink bombs through the city, making it smell like shit. While there you can also go and put the fire out on the opposing teams Wicker man, to just add insult to smelly injury. Once back at your own capital, you can grab a quest to receive an Arcane Cleanser to go around sucking up all the stank that got left in your city. For a little added bonus, burn your own Wicker man, then put the ashes on your face for the Grim Visage buff, increasing experience earned and reputation gained by 10% for 2 hours.
Of course, once you hit 90 the experience means nothing, but the rep is good, you could come and do this and then go hit your farm, to possibly earn rep with The Tillers faster, and who doesn’t like a little extra gold that took little to no effort at all?
Hallow’s End runs from October 18th-November 1st
Death to Garrosh! Death to Garrosh!
Congrats Blizzard, you managed to make an orc hated more than Sephiroth.
Five new world bosses are being introduced today, Ordos and the August Celestials (Chi-Ji, the Red Crane, Yu’Lon, the Jade Serpent, Niuzao, the Black Ox, and Xuen, the White Tiger). All four of the August Celestials share the same loot table, and drop ilvl 522 PVP gear. Ordos can also be found on the Timeless Isle, but to reach him and fight him, you must have the Legendary Cloak that you have been working on (or supposed to have been working on) all expansion.
Siege of Orgrimmar
The Raid will have 4 wings, and 16 bosses, all leading up to us killing the War Criminal, Garrosh Hellscream. Normal and Flex Wing 1 open today.
Patch 5.4 will connect low population realms into groups to form a single Connected Realm.Players from the other realms will be treated as if they were on your realm, so you can trade, raid, and join guilds with the other players.
- This solution gives all the benefits of server merges without having to give up your character or guild names.
- In the process of grouping low population realms, faction balance will be taken into account as much as possible.
- Connected Realms won’t be applied to all of the realms that need it on patch day, but will be applied to a small group of realms as a test first. If everything works well, it will be applied to other realms similar to the release timeline of Cross-Realm Zones.
Patch 5.4 will add a a new raid difficulty: Bring anywhere from 10 to 25 people to your raid and the difficulty will automatically scale.
- Works with battletags, so you can bring friends from other realms.
- Item level of loot (540) is between Raid Finder (528) and Normal (553) and loot is awarded with the Raid Finder style loot system.
- Separate lockout from Raid Finder and Normal, allowing you to do all three difficulties.
- Glory of the Orgrimmar Raider, will be able to be completed in Flex Raids.
Proving Grounds is a way for players to practice new specs and get better at their current spec in an environment that doesn’t inconvenience other players.
- There are four difficulties: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Endless. Endless just keeps getting harder every wave and your highest Endless score is stored as a statistic.
- DPS must kill of the enemy mobs in the time allotted while dealing with different PvE mechanics such as kiting and stuns.
- Tanks must protect a single healer NPC while dealing with different PvE mechanics like knockbacks and fire.
- Healers must keep a party of NPCs alive while dealing with different PvE mechanics like dispelling. Some of the NPCs even like to stand in the fire! (Bastards)
New Armor Sets, will also be made available, PVE, and PVP. Shamans are getting something unique and cool this patch. Since one of the bosses in the raid is a Kor’Kron Dark Shaman, Player Shamans are able to collect pieces of gear to transmog their own gear to that of the Dark Shaman if they choose to. The Cosmetic items will drop in Flex, Normal, and Heroic raids.
The final step in getting your Legendary Cloak is here. Wrathion will send you to the Timeless Isle to collect 5000 TImeless Coins. That is the first step. The second step will be to defeat one of the August Celestials. Upon doing so, Wrathion will give you the Timeless Essence of the Black Dragonflight, to upgrade your cloak to Legendary status. If not caught up, you can still collect Sigil of Wisdom/Power from all the Throne of Thunder bosses, and if you are further along, you can collect everything else from the first 8 bosses of the Siege of Orgrimmar raid.
