Playing video games for 16 hours is normal for a teenager on summer vacation, but if a bunch of adults were doing it, they would be said to be wasting their day. Not when those adults are defending castles from dragons or hunting zombies to participate in The Longest Day. On Saturday, June 21 for 16 hours the staff at Geektriumvirate.com played video games to honor those with Alzheimer’s.
16 Hours of Playing Video Games to Mark The Longest Day
16 Hours of Playing Video Games to Mark The Longest Day

Playing video games for 16 hours is normal for a teenager on summer vacation, but if a bunch of adults were doing it, they would be said to be wasting their day. Not when those adults are defending castles from dragons or hunting zombies to participate in The Longest Day. For 16 hours today, a group of gamers — my fellow coworkers at Geektriumvirate.com, my girlfriend and I — will be playing video games to honor those with Alzheimer’s.
I love playing video games. But more than that, I love my grandmother, who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s.
When I first saw the idea for The Longest Day in one of the Alzheimer’s Association emails, I knew immediately video games would be a great media to get friends and family involved. Video games now are rich with online gameplay and cooperative interaction that, for some of my friends, is the only way we are able to share each other’s time. I wanted to give my friends the sense of achievement you get from actually taking part in a charitable endeavor. But more importantly, I wanted to show my family how much I care about what my grandmother is going through.
Today, we are playing a variety of games — Borderlands 2, World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag — all while sharing the experience with friends via Google Hangout and live streaming the event on our YouTube channel. The morning hours are starting great as teammates Andrew and Amanda are playing World of Warcraft with their guild. Their online guild consists of 250 members from all over the world. Just knowing this event is involving so many people makes me appreciate why I set out to create this event.
Many hours already into The Longest Day, and my thumbs are sore but my spirits are up. Friends and family have been checking in on us via Google Hangout to say hi and watch us. Tonight, we will cap off this important day by visiting the opening party for The Art of Video Games exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.
Today has been truly fulfilling as we used the leisurely fun of video games to help an important and serious cause. I don’t want anyone else to endure what my grandmother endured with this disease. My hope is, there will be an end to Alzheimer’s.
About the Author: When Nathan Dean, 33, isn’t playing video games, he works as a logistics analyst for a marketing agency and is cofounder of the blog GeekTriumvirate.com in Grand Rapids, Mich. This is his first year participating in Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day®.

One Day Until Our 16 Hour Gaming Marathon for Alzheimer’s Association
On June 21, we are participating in The Longest Day, an event to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease. From sunrise to sunset, we will complete an activity of our choosing to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Throughout the day Geek Triumvirate will be playing a variety of video games from old school to next gen. Games to played include; Borderlands 2, World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed 4:Black Flag, and many more. In addition we will be visiting the Toledo Museum of Art for the exhibit Art of the Game. For more information visit here.
During The Longest Day we will be live streaming via Google Hangout and Youtube. Follow us via Twitter and the hashtag #Game4ALZ & #ENDALZ
Together, we can advance research to treat, prevent and, ultimately, cure Alzheimer’s, and provide programs and support to improve the lives of those affected today.
Bros. before Ho-Ho-Ho’s

Feast of Winter Veil is in full swing. The World Event runs from December 16th-January 2nd. If you are playing as Horde, head over to Orgrimmar and see what Great-Father Winter has for you. Likewise, if you are playing as Alliance, head over to Ironforge and see what Greatfather Winter has for you. You will spend most of your time in your respected capital city, in Alterac Mountains (where the Daily Quests send you) and in enemy capitals to work on achievements.
You can buy patterns and recipes from Smokeywood Pastures NPC’s.
- Pattern: Red Winter Clothes is sold by Wulmort Jinglepocket in Ironforge;
- Pattern: Green Winter Clothes is sold by Penney Copperpinch in Orgrimmar;
- Pattern: Winter Boots is sold by Wulmort Jinglepocket in Ironforge and Penney Copperpinch in Orgrimmar.
You also have a chance at getting 4 pets from christmas presents under the tree on December 25th.
There is also a 1% chance of a Dagger dropping from the Daily. I got Miniature Winter Veil Tree last Feast, but no such luck this year.
The big achievement of the event is Merrymaker. It goes towards the achievement What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been and rewards the Merrymaker title.
The achievements for Winter Veil are:
- A-Caroling We Will Go (Alliance/Horde)
- A Frosty Shake
- BB King (Alliance/Horde)
- Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s (Alliance/Horde)
- Crashin’ & Thrashin’
- Fa-la-la-la-Ogri’la
- He Knows If You’ve Been Naughty
- Let It Snow
- On Metzen!
- Scrooge (Alliance/Horde)
- Simply Abominable
- The Winter Veil Gourmet
- ‘Tis the Season
- With a Little Helper from My Friends
You might have noticed that when you go into Inns, you see Winter Revelers. If you /kiss one of the revelers, 2 things are going to happen.
- You will get a Mistletoe debuff, which prevents you from kissing another Reveler for an hour.
- you get 1 of 3 rewards that you need to complete some of the achievements: Fresh Holly; Handful of Snowflakes; Mistletoe.
Fa-la-la-la-Ogri’la requires you to use Fresh Holly or Preserved Holly while doing the Bomb Them Again! daily quest in Blade’s Edge Mountains. When you complete the quest, you will get the achievement.
To finish Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s, Alliance players will need to obtain 8 pieces of Mistletoe while Horde players will only need 3. Then, players need to visit NPCs and use the Mistletoe on them.
- Alliance NPCs
- Brother Nimetz: Rebel Camp in Stranglethorn Vale
- Brother Karman: Theramore, just outside the keep, next to the training dummies
- Brother Joshua: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, next to the altar
- Brother Benjamin: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, walking on the right side as you enter
- Brother Cassius: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, in the first room on the right
- Brother Crowley: Stormwind City, inside the Catedral, down the stairs on the right
- Brother Kristoff: Stormwind City, just outside the Catedral, next to the fountain
- Brother Wilhelm: Goldshire, outside the forge
- Horde NPCs
- Brother Malach: Undercity, at the War Quarter
- Brother Keltan: Icecrown, aboard the Horde airship
- Durkot Wolfbrother: Borean Tundra, south-west corridor out of Warsong Hold
The Daily Quest in Alterac Mountains is pretty much a Tank n Spank. The Abominable Greench has kidnapped Metzen the Reindeer. You have to go find the Greench, kill him, and talk to Metzen and he will return to Father-Winter.
